Biography

I am Laura-Jane Phoenix Singh, a proud First Nations woman from the Quandmooka and Wiradjuri Nations of Australia; I am a mother, a tidda, a sister and a friend. I am the Associate Head of School (Indigenous Engagement and Education) for Life and Environmental Science at Deakin University. I am a highly knowledgeable individual with a profound understanding of the critical fields of sociology, First Nations knowledge and education, and health. Within the realm of LES, my multifaceted role encompasses teaching, research, and curriculum development, with a steadfast commitment to incorporating First Nations perspectives and knowledge systems and an unwavering dedication to creating a curriculum that centres cultural knowledge through meaningful engagement with the First Nations community, by focusing on building reciprocal relationships and honouring knowledge, Country and Culture. When we do this, we allow for the sharing of information, increase capacity for caring for the Country, and most importantly though, increase First Nations representation within STEM, meaning that First Nations peoples see themselves, their community and their knowledge systems adequately represented within science, technology, engineering and mathematics. I became interested in science through my passion for education, especially in the tertiary sector. After completing a master's degree in Indigenous education, specialising in curriculum development, I realised that First Nations people have a wealth of knowledge to share beyond just health and education. Unfortunately, our invisibility in these spaces can discourage engagement, retention, and safety. It is time we recognise First Nations people as experts in their respective fields and create a collaborative environment for shared learning. As Professor Judy Atkinson has said, sharing our stories in safe spaces can lead to healing. Universities and educational institutions must facilitate these conversations that promote transformative change so we can make waves that impact future generations.
